Warm baths open the pores and create sweating as well as helping to open the cells and release toxins. They also help lower blood sugar, relieve painful joints and muscles, and improve colon peristalsis – moving your bowels! My favourite, as a practioner, is the Epsom Salts bath. It is something I do on three consecutive nights, over three consecutive weeks, when I am fighting a virus, in need of a detox, or just in need of a bit of a health spa treat at home!
Health-wise, Epsom Salts are made up of magnesium sulphate, which is something you really want your skin (your body’s largest organ) to absorb and take into your cells. Very simply put, there are four main minerals that are absolutely essential for optimum cell health: sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium. The natural place for sodium and calcium is outside the cell and magnesium and potassium should be inside the cell. Anything that changes that polarity can cause “stress’ at a cellular level and stop the cells doing their job. If the electrolyte balance is disrupted, the cells don’t function or cleanse properly. And every single cell in the body needs to cleanse properly if we are to lose weight, get over illness, and have a healthy symptom-free body.
The trouble is our 21st century diet is abundant in calcium and sodium and seriously deficient in magnesium and potassium so most of the time that ideal doesn’t exist. So, apart form upping your fruit and veg for more potassium and magnesium, try this lovely bath for relief from aching muscles as well as a huge health boost.
The temperature should be as hot as is comfortable. Add 1 cup of Epsom salts to a full bath and soak for 10-20 minutes. Do this for 3 consecutive evenings over 3 consecutive weeks. After the bath: wrap up warmly, drink plenty of water and rest. You will sleep like a baby after one of these!
