All in Health and Nutrition
The ingredients for my daily smoothies change as often as the UK weather! I am constantly adding new ingredients, researching and trialling the latest pro-aging foods and, after years of experimenting, I think this is now The Perfect Smoothie, so far, for delivering optimum nutrition and a protein punch - very important for supporting our adrenals in the morning to give us maximum energy and healthy hormones.
We're likely to eat a shocking 6000 calories on Christmas Day, as well as an extra 500 calories every day on the run-up to the holiday, which starts earlier and earlier each year. By the time we reach New Year's Eve, we could be wearing an extra 5lbs around our tummy..........
Have you noticed that when there's a a major change of season, we often feel the urge to de-clutter our wardrobes, offices & homes? A good many of us also like to de-clutter our bodies at the same time. I'm one of them. Every Spring and Autumn Equinox I try and do a longer fast than normal. it's a naturopathic thing I have done since training as a Nutritionist, oh so long ago.
If you're a regular reader, you'll know how much I love trying out new recipes. Especially Jamie Oliver's recipes. I love him! He's so enthusiastic and cares so much about the health of the nation that I always check his site online if I have something to cook and am not sure how to do it. And this one's healthy, quick & oh so tasty.
Well, that got your attention, didn't it?! I in 3 women suffer from the odd leak, especially those who have had children, from spring chickens to silver foxes. Although I haven't had babies, I have always suffered from a weak bladder and occasionally have just peed myself I've been laughing so much. The first time was when I was 17 years old, in the street! Thank goodness I was wearing tights. Nowadays, although the urges are worse, I have followed all of my own advice below and listened to my doctor, so it's only an odd trickle.
When I trained as a Nutritionist, oh so many years ago, one of the first things we were taught was how important magnesium is for every single cell in the body, as well as every single woman on the planet! Fast-forward 20 years and I have to admit that although I am really good about having regular Epsom Salts Baths to get some of that magnesium into my body via the skin, & eating my green veg., I am not so good at taking supplements.
Here's a quick video of what I put in my juice. This is the recipe that I find easy & quick as well as giving me my five portions of VEG & one portion of fruit a day - at least! This health in a glass will give you a huge boost of nutrients to set you up for the day with minimum natural sugar. Plus you can also add some extra health benefits by chucking it in a blender and adding superfoods, such as cinnamon, flaxseeds, and turmeric, that I mention in more detail in my smoothie for 5:2 fast days here.
You probably know by now that I love quinoa and that the kid folk at Quinola Mothergrain are enabling me to feed my addiction with a regular supply of red, black and plain quinoa. I'm not just saying it's the best I've ever eaten 'cause it's free, it really is the nicest quinoa I have ever cooked - and I have done vats of the stuff in the past - and this one never looks like frogs spawn or goes all slimy like so many others do!
We think nothing of taking our cars in to have an annual service so why don't we do this for our bodies? I am such a fan of Intermittent Fasting and, in particular, Doctor Valter Longo's latest research into ageing & longevity, (and how important a 5 day fast is at least once a year), that I decided to take myself off to a detox retreat to do a 5 day juice fast, something I find impossible to do at home for that long, despite being able to carry out the 5:2 very easily. My car had an annual service, now it was my turn!
There is so much around on the net at the moment about the benefits of turmeric taken as a tea (ALWAYS with a little black pepper to increase its bioavailability) that I wanted to share one with you that is really quick, easy and has some added extras for optimum health. It's also dairy free. You can make the tea hot or cold but as I don't like tea of any description I make mine as a cold drink (body temperature). The first attempt wasn't as bad as I expected.......like an easy to swallow health potion.....you can see my first try in the video at the end.
Now it's warming up in the Northern Hemisphere, here's a detox smoothie you might like to try, which I've been enjoying whilst living in Byron Bay. It contains many of the ingredients I have included in other smoothies before but this one has a couple of new additions that help with detoxing, add extra health benefits, and is totally vegan. Most of all it's quick and easy.
I am such a huge fan of the Aussie breakfast, even more this year as it's become the most important meal of my day, while I'm here. I am trying the 16:8 fast regime this year, instead of the 5:2. (That's eating at 7.00 pm the night before and not eating again till 11.00 the next morning, making it a 16 hour fast.) I have to get the hell out in the morning, before it gets really hot, so most of my exercise is all done before 11.00 a.m. latest. I am swimming and cycling nearly every day.......The Best exercise, especially for us older folk, that I wrote about last year, as well as walking 10,000 steps along the beach & round Byron as often as possible. (I also do a 15 minute HIIT programme nearly every afternoon, more on that another time.)
